Lectio Divina for Beginners: How to Pray the Bible Slowly
A different way to read
Lectio divina—Latin for 'divine reading'—is a slow, prayerful way of meeting God in a short passage. Instead of covering ground, you linger. Four gentle movements have guided Christians for centuries: read, reflect, respond, and rest.
Read and reflect
Choose a few verses and read them slowly, even aloud. Then read them again, noticing the word or phrase that quietly catches your attention. Do not analyze it to death; simply stay with it, and ask what it might be saying to you today.
Respond and rest
Turn what you noticed into honest prayer—thanks, confession, a request, a question held before God. Then stop speaking and rest in his presence, letting the passage settle. This final silence is not wasted time; it is much of the point.
Keep it short and regular
Five to ten minutes is plenty. Lectio divina rewards return far more than length. Protect a small daily window—before the phone wakes up the rest of your day—and let one passage, prayed slowly, shape the hours that follow.
