What the Bible Says About Phones, Distraction, and Attention
Scripture takes your attention seriously
The Bible is full of language about watchfulness and focus. 'Set your minds on things above' (Colossians 3:2). 'Whatever is true, whatever is noble... think about such things' (Philippians 4:8). Long before notifications, Scripture understood that what we dwell on slowly shapes who we become.
Distraction is an old human problem
In Luke 10, Martha is 'distracted by all the preparations,' while Mary chooses the one thing that is needed. The pull away from presence is not new; our phones have simply made it faster and more constant. The remedy is the same it has always been: choosing the better portion.
Guarding the heart includes guarding the feed
'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it' (Proverbs 4:23). What we let in through a screen is part of what we are guarding. This is not fear of the world; it is ordinary wisdom about what forms our desires over time.
Turn verses into a small practice
A list of verses is only a beginning. Choose one—say, Psalm 46:10, 'Be still, and know that I am God'—and let it shape the first few minutes of your day before the feed does. A short passage held in the morning does more than a hundred saved screenshots.
